Stockpile Your Food!

foodToday on the Drudge Report I found an article from the Wall Street Journal that talked about stockpiling food. Now, I don’t wanna go all Mormon on ya’ll, but stockpiling food, learning to hunt/fish/garden, and learning to prepare survival meals are very important. The Mormons pride themselves on having at least one year of food stockpiled for each one of their family members. Now for regular “joe schmoes” like me (who are genetically predisposed to procrastination) it can sometimes be daunting to even keep my pantry full of a months worth of food.

I have found many resources on the internet that give great information about food storage, shelf life, and nutritional values. I implore all who read this (including myself) to educate yourself on these things and ultimately begin stockpiling your food and water supply. Global economic woes, natural disasters, or a full fledge wartime invasion would have devastating effects on the supply chain. As a father or husband we need to learn how to become self reliant and get past our natural tendencies to put stuff off until later.

There is so much to learn and so much TO BUY that if you don’t start now you will regret it down the road. This is precisely why we started this website… to get people (and ourselves) on the track to self reliance and survival readiness.

Big Stick, out.

I have been looking for a list of what to stock up on for children. (besides food-water) ages 4-10. Does anyone have a good list, ideas or web links?

    Thanks!

    Hi Stockingmom,

Besides food and water? I’m not sure that I’ve ever run across anything like that.

And as for food, I would imagine children would be eating the same as every other member of the household, should the situation ever arise.

Fat. Good sources of fat – children & elderly will lose weight more quickly with worse result than your average adult. I’ve added in vegetable shortening, chocolate, high protein bars, carnation instant breakfast (sugar free), and peanut butter. OK, I know that’s not all fat, but as a supplement, I think these are all good sources of additional calories for some extra skinny boys I seem to have (wish I had the same problem).

re stocking up for children: For children under 2 years of age, try to get some whole milk powder. You can make a 2% mixture using whole and non-fat milk. Whole milk is about 26% fat; just mix 10:1. Hard candy is helpful. Kool Aid actually contains some vitamin C. Also, the acid of the Kool Aid neutralizes any bleach you may have had to add to the water to disinfect it. Remember to buy vitamins. A serving of Tang counts as a fruit serving.
For non-food items: underwear, socks, shoes, boots, jackets, mitts, etc. in various sizes. Try thrift store for larger items. Shampoo, soap, first aid supplies, a few toys, games, books to keep from losing your mind. Unfortunately, stock up on head lice treatment. Getting rid of head lice is possible with home rememdies, but they’re unpleasant. The worst case of head lice I ever saw had to be treated with kerosene combed through the hair, followed by shampooing with brown laundry soap. Write back if you have any questions.
